Welcome to the Penguin Post!

Welcome to the Penguin Post!

A Brief Word About The Penguin Post

Next Stop South Pole / Penguin Place was founded in 1985 at South Street Seaport, and I wrestled for some time with the idea of an all-penguin club or publication that would bring together all the penguin lovers I was meeting daily at the Seaport. I felt a responsibility being at what was rapidly becoming the center of the penguin collecting universe, meeting, greeting, and exchanging many an interesting waddling tale from fellow penguin people. After giving the matter of a club some thought it became apparent that a penguin collectors club would be impractical, as 85% of my customers were from outside of the New York metropolitan area. Instead, I realized that I could use the ever increasing inventory of interesting, humorous and insightful stories encompassing virtually every aspect of penguin-loving to create my own all-penguin publication. I had the advantage of an unlimited source of material at my flippertips: I was privy to a daily dose of juicy penguin news, information and gossip from all four corners of the globe just by opening my doors each day at Next Stop South Pole. And so on March 15th, 1995, a dream was realized when the worlds first all-penguin newsletter rolled off the presses. Fittingly enough, the date also fell on the occasion of Next Stop South Pole's 10th anniversary.

I decided I had more than enough penguin information sources and resources to make it a quarterly publication and quickly began to accumulate subscribers through my shops in New York and Baltimore. The annual domestic subscription price for the four issues was $5.00, or 75 per issue sold at the Next Stop South Pole shop, the debut issue (Penguin Post Vol. 1 #1) sold nearly 300 copies in the first month, and over the years readership grew steadily, peaking to just over a thousand domestic subscribers and 200 international waddling readers from every continent, including Antarctica.

Articles ranged from silly to serious: from oil spills in South Africa to penguin-shaped hot air balloons in Germany. We scanned the world for anything and everything we thought waddling-worthy of our particular readership. Movies, music and literary reviews about penguins, profiles about Chilly Willy, Opus, Bad Badtz Maru and Feathers McGraw, penguin zoo news, and sports, including coverage of the Pittsburgh and Youngstown State Penguins, and even an interview with former Los Angeles Dodger great Ron The Penguin Cey. We also included a variety of Antarctic travel guides, penguins in advertising, and of course, personal penguin collectors profiles.

Over the years, 25 print Penguin Post issues were published, with contributions from scores of fellow penguin fans and readers, which fulfilled my original goal of bringing a sense of community and kinship to all who share our collective penguin passion. In 2002, the Penguin Post went in a new direction as the soaring cost of printing and postage had combined with the near universa access to the internet, and we ceased our print format and began our exclusively on-line version of Penguin Post.

Now with the click of a mouse you can waddle over to view the latest penguin news, reviews, and information anytime, anyplace, and with no printing and postage charges to deal with. The Penguin Post is now offered to all our readers on-line at absolutely no charge. Print back issues are still available for purchase and select excerpts from our back issues can be viewed on-line as well

Keep Waddling,
